The inspiration came from the actual glassmaking process. Most molds in the glass factory are blown out while constantly turning the glass pipe to get a smooth glass surface. I made the first test by switching the method, the mold was turning and the glassmaker and his pipe didn‘t move. To push this technique, I tried this with two glassmakers and two pieces of glass in one mold. The result but also the making are stunning.
The glassmaker and their movements during the making needs to be very coordinated, the glass needs to be ready at the same time. This only works with skilled glassmakers. It looks like a dance they perform, they need to watch each other, take care not to harm each other with the hot floating glass.
It is called hug because the two glass pieces embrace each other like an intimate contact. Two glass pieces with own volumes, stuck together in the center. The result is an organic object (vase), the contour is designed but how the glass pieces touches and where the hug takes place is always unique. The pieces are blown into a rotating mold inspired by heart.
The look of the two openings is depending on how the glassmakers get into the mold and how fast the glass gets cold and stop being fluid. The neck is then shopped and reheated to get a smooth edge, this underlines the organic movement.
For the color we decided to work in one code because there is happening a lot in the design and this would look overloaded. The biggest challenge was that the glass won‘t break at the touching point. The timing of the glassmaker is relevant and how they blow the air inside the glass. If one glassmaker is blowing too strong, he would deform the other glass too much, and it wouldn‘t work.
