Cutlery Plan     (Various)

»Plan« was born out of the idea of designing prison cutlery. During my research, I discovered that airline cutlery is subject to similar safety criteria. In the course of my work, however, I have moved aspects, as they made it difficult to create an aesthetically sophisticated design.

The average height/length of the individual cutlery pieces should make it difficult for the prisoners to hide them or use it as a weapon. The tools, on the other hand (spoon, cutting edge, prongs), are proportionately very short and are based on those of airline cutlery. The manufacturing costs play an important role in the choice of material and design of a prisoner’s cutlery. This is the reason for the characteristic »kink« in my design. In order to keep the production costs low, it makes sense to stamp the cutlery from a sheet material.

Since the bend creates volume in the handle area the handle area, an additional reinforcement of the handle is not necessary (e.g. by using wood or other materials). Due to the difference in material thickness from 3 mm to 1 mm, the tools balance very comfortably in the hand.
